Banners that send a message
Want to get someone’s attention? Make a banner! Messages of Love, Birthday, Danger, Fiesta, Attention…whatever, Banners say it best.
Banners are a customizable Salesforce features that can say anything your client wants! They are used to grab the User’s attention and are often related to something that’s time sensitive.
In The Giving Tree Foundation project that Abby and I created for Talent Stacker, we created a Donation Management app. The client wanted us to create Banners to appear at the top of the donor record page when a specific condition was met.
From the front facing side of Salesforce, click on the object (tab) that you want the banner to appear. For GTF, we want to click on the Donors tab.
From the list of Donors, select the Name of any donor to open the donor record. It doesn’t matter which one.
In the top right corner, click on the gear icon and select Edit Page from the drop down menu.
The Lightning App Builder page will appear. All formatting changes saved here will appear on all donor records.
From the Components side bar in the left margin, click on Rich Text and drag it onto the canvas where you want to banner to appear.
We dragged 2 Rich Text components to the top of the Donor lightning record page.
Click on the first Rich Text component that is at the top and the right margin will update so you can edit the component. In the top blank section, you can write a text message and format the Font, size, bold, underline, position and select a color, etc. Then in the Set Component Visibility section, you can define conditions when you want the system to display the banner. In this component, if the At-Risk checkbox field is checked then display “At-Risk” in red. Note, “Display as card” is checked.
Now click on the second Rich Text component to edit in the right margin. In the top blank section, you can write a text message (eg Donated Last Year but not This Year) and format the Font, size, bold, underline, position and select a color, etc.
Then in the Set Component Visibility section, you can define conditions when you want the system to display this banner. In this component, if the Total Gifts This Year field = $0 and Total Gifts Last Year field is greater than or equal to $1, then display “Donated Last Year but not This Year” in red. Note the “All filters are true” radio button is checked. This means that both conditions need to be TRUE for the banner to show.
If you’ve made an error and need to remove the banner, then move your cursor into the Rich Text component that you want to delete until the trash can icon appears in the top right corner of the component. Click on the trash icon to delete the component.
When you’re done, click on Save in the top right corner. Then click on the Activation button. The User will not see the new page unless it is activated. Even if it is saved.
Once you click on Activation, a pop up box will appear where you can assign the page at 3 different levels.
If you select Org Default, then the entire org will see the page as it’s saved. Broadest access.
If you select App Default, then only the selected App will see the page as it’s saved. Access to Users who have permission to the App you selected.
If you select App, Record Type, and Profile, then you will be directed to select a specific App, Record Type and Profile. You are allowing specific Users access to the page as it’s saved. Most restrictive / precise access specified.
Once it’s saved and activated, you can click on the back arrow at the top left corner to exit the Lightning App Builder page and you’ll go back to the donor record page.
Now, it’s time to celebrate because we’ve learned how to create Banners in Salesforce and it’s Valentines Day!
